Malaysia’s UCSI University starts journey in Bangladesh

The UCSI University – a top private institution in Malaysia – has launched its first international campus in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh's Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni and Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury Nawfel inaugurated the university's Bangladesh campus at Le Méridien hotel in the capital on Wednesday.

The university’s Pro-VC Tunku Abidin, Malaysian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Haznah Md Hashim, Bangladesh campus' Chairman Mollah Waheeduzzaman and Senior Vice-President Ariful Bari Majumder attended the opening ceremony.

UCSI University is rated 284th in the QS World University Ranking 2023.

Education Minister Dipu Moni said the bilateral relations and cooperation will be strengthened between Malaysia and Bangladesh through the opening of this foreign university campus.

She added that the university will ensure higher education of international standards. Education will be the key driving force to build a smart Bangladesh, and these higher educational institutions have to play a major role in this work.

Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury Nawfel said, “Quality education will have to be ensured for supplying employable graduates, considering the current global job markets.

“The universities should prioritise ensuring the competence of students, along with providing certificates, because the job providers want skilled manpower.”

Malaysian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Haznah Md Hashim said, “The historical and friendly ties between the two countries will be strengthened further through the opening of the Bangladesh campus of UCSI University in Malaysia.

“Through quality education, this university will contribute to the development of Bangladesh and bring success and prosperity.”

On December 12 last year, the university received approval from the Bangladesh government to open its first branch campus in Bangladesh.

After the approval from the Bangladesh government, Malaysia's Higher Education Minister Dato Seri Mohd Khaled Nordin inaugurated the soft launching of the Bangladesh campus in a ceremony at the university's main campus in Kuala Lumpur on February 3.

The university currently operates three campuses in Kuala Lumpur, Kuching, and Port Dickson in Malaysia in addition to the Bangladesh campus in Dhaka's Banani.

UCSI's Bangladesh campus will commence at a 45,000 square feet city campus in Dhaka with 24 degree and master's programmes in business, computer science, engineering, architecture, social sciences and design.

Director General of South East Asia Region of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nazmul Huda, Director Afzal Hossain, Director Aniza Parveen, Vice-Chancellor Dr Siti Hamisah Binti Tapsir, Strategic Consultant of the University's Bangladesh Campus, Shaheen Reza attended the event among many others.
