Dr Sadeka Halim, professor of the Department of Sociology at the University of Dhaka, has been appointed as the first female Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Jagannath University (JnU).

She was appointed for the next 4 years through a notification issued by the Ministry of Education on Thursday.

Sadeka Halim was appointed as the 6th VC of the University. She was also the first female dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Dhaka. Before this, she also served as the first female Chief Information Commissioner of Bangladesh from July 2009 to June 2014.

Besides, she served as a syndicate member of the University of Dhaka from 2004 to 2009, and she was a member of the executive council of the Teachers' Association and a three-time member of the Senate.

She was a member of the National Education Policy Committee-18 of 2009 special educationists committee.

Sadeka Halim's father Fazlul Halim Chowdhury was the vice-chancellor of the University of Dhaka from 1976 to 1983.

Her ancestral home is Kunjshripur village of Alkara union of Chauddagram upazila of Comilla district.

Sadeka Halim passed SSC from Udayan Uchcha Madhyamik Bidyalaya and HSC from Holy Cross School and College, Dhaka. Later, she completed her graduation and post-graduation from the Department of Sociology at the University of Dhaka.
