School syllabuses may get shortened and fewer examinations may be held if the spread of coronavirus prolongs, says Ministry of Education and Primary and Mass Education Ministry.
In the backdrop of the coronavirus outbreak, schools have been shut for nearly a month now. The authorities also suspended HSC and equivalent exams to contain the infection among the students.
Both the ministries said they were observing the current situation and contemplating their next moves to cut short the syllabuses and examinations as well.
Secondary and Higher Education Division Secretary Mahbub Hossain said overcoming academic losses in case of a long term school closure would be difficult for the pupils.
"We will take a decision to shorten school syllabuses if COVID-19 outbreak keeps on deteriorating," Mahbub said.
In the neighbouring West Bengal state of India, a decision has been made to promote pre-primary to middle secondary students to upper classes without examinations. Similarly, eleventh graders will turn into twelve graders automatically, the state government declared.
In Bangladesh, schools have been shut until April 25. But the Ramadan holiday will begin on the same day, expanding the leaves until Eid-Ul Fitre.
