Education Minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury Nowfel has said that private universities in the country have been playing an important role in building a skilled and knowledgeable generation.

“Some private universities are now good enough to award MPhil and PhD degrees. The universities can also go into research if they get permission. They can look for research degree permission from the University Grants Commission (UGC),” he said while talking to The Business Post recently.

He said the management of private universities should change their mindset and concentrate on quality education.

“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after assuming power in 2008 enacted the Private University Act and that allowed us to guide the private universities,” he said.

The university alumni can also play a vital role in helping students find jobs. In developed countries, alumni facilitate the job placement of their juniors, the minister added.

Mohibul said the recently established private universities should increase the capacity to run the universities smoothly. University authorities also must focus on increasing necessary infrastructure and lab facilities and recruiting skilled manpower before starting their academic programmes.

Setting up of new departments should be done based on the demand of time and reality. The UGC should take necessary steps to ensure quality education and research in the country, the minister said.
