Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni has said that universities in Bangladesh will be reopened in phases from October 17 in accordance with health guidelines.

The minister said this in a meeting of the education ministry, primary and mass education ministry and the national technical advisory committee on Thursday.

However, any decision of reopening universities will be determined according to information on vaccinated teachers and students, she said.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) will collect the information from the universities.

This information will include the number of general students, teachers and students in the residential halls have received vaccination — 1st dose and 2nd dose.

Also, in the meeting, it was decided to extend the closure of educational institutions to September 11 due to the Covid-19 situation in the country.

The government shut the educational institutions on March 17, 2020, after the country reported its first Covid-19 cases on March 8.

Then the closure was extended several times, most recently until August 31.
