Most of the public universities throughout Bangladesh have vacant posts, including vice-chancellor positions. Aside from disrupting classes and examinations, the issue has nearly halted administrative activities of such educational institutions.

A list is being prepared for the appointment of vice-chancellors in universities, with priorities being given to teachers who have shown three qualities persistently – academic qualifications, personality and administrative skills, said Education Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud.

Addressing a press conference at his office in the Secretariat on Wednesday, Wahiduddin said, “There is an advantage when a party is in power, as they have teachers’ organisations. One person is selected from there and made vice chancellor.

“In our case, we are not getting that opportunity. Now information is being collected from the teachers we know in different universities.”

While discussing qualifications of new vice-chancellors, the education advisor said, “We are making a list of teachers who are acceptable to all in terms of academic qualifications, personality and administrative skills.

“We will appoint vice-chancellors in the universities as soon as possible.”
