To commemorate the 62nd birth anniversary of Niloy Das, the band Rongdhonu, formed by two of his former students, is going to organise a memorial concert in collaboration with Alliance Française de Dhaka on September 22 at 7 pm at Café la Véranda of AFD, Dhanmondi in the capital.

“Rongdhonu” is a versatile band with experienced musicians and a wide multilingual repertoire of Bengali, English, French and Spanish songs.

An influential name in the Bangla music scene, Niloy Das pioneered modern urban Bangla music and introduced western genres like classical, neoclassical, blues, metal, and jazz to Bangladesh.

Although not a household name, probably because he was averse to the limelight, this brilliant composer and singer had a profound influence on a generation of music lovers of this country.

Born on September 30, 1961, Niloy was blessed to have renowned singers and music exponents Sudhin Das and Nilima Das as his parents.

He composed and sang famous songs like "Koto Je Khujechhi Tomaye", "E Shohor" and "Jokhoni Nibir Korey", which have been remixed and reperformed time and again. He even played the guitar at the performances by the famous ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali. His talents however, were not limited to playing the guitar but extended deep into the field of vocals.

According to his students though, Niloy's greatest talent lay in teaching. Musicians like Kamol, Bappa Mazumdar, Shumon and Buno, who are the dominant figures of the country's urban music, had learned to play guitar from Niloy Das.
