A Dhaka court has issued an arrest warrant against popular actress Mousumi in a check dishonour case involving a financial institution. The court has set October 16 as the deadline for submitting a report on the arrest.

A case was filed against actress Mousumi on December 3 of last year by an official of a financial institution for dishonouring a check worth 1,06,211 taka. The court took cognisance of the case and summoned her to appear. Summons were sent to her Gulshan residence, and later to her Basundhara residence when the first summons was returned. Since Mousumi did not appear in court after being summoned, the court issued an arrest warrant against her on July 24.

Mousumi is currently in the United States and could not be reached for comment. Her husband and fellow actor, Omar Sani, spoke on this matter.

He said, “I know hundreds of other loan defaulters who owe much larger amounts, like one crore, two crores, three crores, or even five crores, to this same institution but have not been sued. Yet, they have pursued a case against Mousumi for a few lakh taka! This is nothing but an attempt to humiliate and disrespect Mousumi. Since her name is Mousumi, they tried to make it viral. If a small amount can be used to dishonour Mousumi, why aren't the names of other loan defaulters being revealed?”

Regarding the incident, Omar Sani said, “Mousumi had taken a loan for a Mercedes car and issued 8 or 11 checks. After Mousumi went abroad, the institution contacted me. I told them that I don't live in Gulshan anymore; I live in Basundhara. Please send the letter there. They said okay and said they had sent it. But they still sent a letter to the Gulshan address. Then I said, 'We are facing a crisis. It would be better if you could reduce the instalment amount a bit. For example, 30, 40, 50, or 60 thousand taka—whenever I can, I will pay it. Please hold the checks. Give me some time.”

He further said, “One lakh taka is not possible for me to pay right now because there were complications with Mousumi and my bank accounts at that time. So, the transactions were stopped. The accounts where Mousumi had issued the checks were frozen. Even after explaining everything, they didn't listen to me. I even wrote a letter to the chairman. Instead, they told me to hand over the car. They didn't treat me well. At one point, they told me that she (Mousumi) had fled. Then I said, 'Why are you talking like a stupid? For this small amount, Mousumi will leave the country?' I am her husband, and I am repeatedly telling you, why are you thinking like this?”

When asked about their next steps, Omar Sani said, “Now I will try to resolve this legally. I am trying to sell the car and resolve this quickly. Again, I think this is being done to humiliate Mousumi.”
