In a shocking turn of events, theatre, movie and television actor Ahmed Reza Rubel passed away on Wednesday evening. He was 56.

The actor may have died after suffering a cardiac arrest, film director Nurul Alam Atique, who was with Rubel at the time, told reporters after the news of Rubel’s death spread. However, the official cause of death is yet to be known.

A special screening was held for Atique's new film “Peyarar Subash” at Star Cineplex of Bashundhara City Shopping Mall in Dhaka in the evening. The movie, led by Jaya Ahsan, is set for nationwide release on Friday.

Rubel, who played one of the lead characters in the film, was on his way to attend the premiere show when he collapsed, according to cast and crew members.

Veteran actor Tariq Anam Khan, who stars in the new film, told the media, “Rubel fell sick and collapsed after getting out of the car in the basement of Bashundhara City. He may have suffered a heart attack. Rubel was rushed to a private hospital, where the duty doctor declared him dead.”

The sudden death of Rubel, known for his roles in “Pret”, “Bachelor”, and “Shyamol Chhaya”, has stunned both the entertainment industry and his admirers.

Throughout his career, Rubel has starred in a total of 19 films and countless TV dramas and serials. He recently even made his mark on the OTT arena as well.

Born on May 3, 1968 in Chapainawabganj, Ahmed Rubel started his career in Selim Al Deen's theatre group Dhaka Theatre. Later, he concentrated into mainstream commercial movies and starred in lead roles in six successful movies. Then he left the film industry to work in television dramas.

His journey on the silver screen had started in 1994 when he starred in the movie “Akheri Hamla”. He came back to theatre again to work in “Bonopangshul”, a theatrical drama. At this point he moved to television dramas by director Aatiqul Huq Chowdhury.

But his first appearance in television was Giyasuddin Selim's “Swapnojatra”. He followed in Humayun Ahmed's Eid drama “Poka” where he played the character Ghora Mojid, still famous among his fans.

He came to limelight after starring in the lead role in TV serial “Pret”, which was was based on Muhammad Zafar Iqbal's novel by the same name and directed by Aahir Alam.

He then continued working in television with Mostofa Sarwar Faruqui and others. He also worked in Humayun Ahmed's Bangladesh Liberation War-related movie “Shyamol Chhaya”.

Rubel won Best Film Actor, Critics Choice Awards at the 6th Meril Prothom Alo Awards for the film “Chandrokotha” in 2004 and won the ‘Best Actor’ award, under the ‘Feature Film’ category, at the 15th Jaipur International Film Festival 2023 (JIFF) for his role in the film “Priyo Satyajit”.
