Popularly known as the ‘Pop Guru’ of Bangladesh, Azam Khan, the legendary Bangladeshi singer, was considered to be one of the main pioneers of popular Bangladeshi pop music. If the singer was alive today, he would have been celebrating his 74th birth anniversary today.

He was born in Azimpur on this day in 1950. Azam Khan was also a freedom fighter who took part and fought for the freedom of Bangladesh in 1971. Following the Liberation War, he made his presence felt in the music scenario with his band Uccharon. Bangladesh Television broadcasted his first concert in 1972.

Azam Khan is considered as the individual who introduced the pop genre to Bangladeshis and together with pop music contemporaries Fakir Alamgir, Ferdous Wahid, Firoz Shai, Najma Zaman, and Pilu Momtaz, created that impact that would forever leave a legacy.

Azam Khan died on June 5, 2011 at the Combined Military Hospital (Dhaka) at the age of 61, after a long battle with oral cancer.
