The birth centenary of eminent artist SM Sultan will be observed on Friday at his hometown Narail.

The district administration and SM Sultan Smrity Sangrhashala and District Shilpakala Academy have chalked out elaborate programmes to mark the day.

The programmes include placing wreaths at Sultan’s grave, doa mahfil, children’s art competition, journey by boat, discussion and film screening.

At the event, documentary film about the Bangladeshi painter SM Sultan ‘Adam Surat’ directed by Tareque Masud will be screened.

‘Adam Surat’ is the first film of Masud. It is a documentary about Bangladeshi painter Sheikh Mohammed Sultan (well known as SM Sultan). Masud started the film in 1982 and completed after seven years later. By that time, he had met and married the Chicago-born Catherine Shapere (well known as Catherine Masud), with whom he formed a close working relationship until his death.

SM Sultan was born on August 10 in 1924 at Masimdia village of Narail. He got admitted to Calcutta Art College with the help of the then zamindars of Narail. His fame rests on his striking depictions of exaggeratedly muscular Bangladeshi peasants engaged in the activities of their everyday lives.

SM Sultan won ‘Ekushey Padak’ in 1982. In 1984, he was declared as the’ Resident Artist’ by the government. Sultan also achieved ‘Bangladesh Charu Shilpi Sangsad Award’ in 1986 and ‘Swadhinata Padak’ in 1993.
