Today, we are privileged to have the exceptionally talented actress, Shahnaz Sumi, join us. With notable performances in hit films such as "Damal" and "Paap Punno," as well as contributions to web-series and dramas, Sumi's star continues to rise. Recently, she took on a pivotal role in the released series 'Mobaraknama,' where she portrayed the character Suraiya. Shamim Shopno from The Business Post leads the interview, and we sincerely thank Shahnaz Sumi for graciously sharing her precious time with us.

So, tell me, was it always your dream to become an actress?

Sumi: From My childhood, i loved and practiced dancing. There I got the chance to learn from Aupee Karim and Bijori Barkatullah ma’am. I saw them venturing into the showbiz realm, maintaining everything wonderfully. From that i got my inspiration. And finally today i am here.

Tell us more about your character in ‘Mobaraknama’

Sumi: My character’s name is Suraiya. She is a dark but independent character. She wants to live her life with freedom but doesn’t ever harm anyone. But you know about the norms of our society. Women can’t dress as they like, they can’t smoke freely like men. People judge a woman by their appearance very fast. Suraiya dives deeply into the cultural and societal barriers a woman faces. She is somehow very strong. I enjoyed the character very much.

As you said, it’s a sensitive character. What were the challenges that you faced?

Sumi: First thing that came to mind was, should i do the character? I thought it through and Dodul (Director) bhai helped me to understand the storyline. Many controversial dialogues and scenes were there. But everyone helped me through the whole process, Shabnam Faria apu, Jenny apu, Mosharraf bhai, Shaon, everyone from hoichoi. I overcame the challenges with the help of everyone.

What kind of feedback did you get after the trailer and first episode were released?

Sumi: Mostly positive feedback but some said about a dialogue, “Na Mane Na” was copied from Amitabh Bachchan’s famous dialogue, “No Means No” from the film, “Pink.” After the release of the first episode, their tone changed, as they understood it's a unique story. Everyone really appreciated my acting and congratulated me.

What is your assessment of the present condition of the entertainment industry as an emerging actor?

Sumi: I think our industry is growing. I have worked on very few projects because to me the story is the most important part. Now I see many upcoming actors who came to the industry to become famous. They think getting more followers online is the way to gain success. That could never be the way. And you have to be a bit careful about who you are working with. To me, it never matters about the social media followers. I hope the industry will produce more wonderful works that we can be proud of.

Are there particular directors or actors you're eager to collaborate with in the future?

Sumi: I always wanted to work with Humayun Ahmed as I have grown up watching his wonderful works. But unfortunately, he passed away. I also have a fascination to work with Rituparna and Soumitra Chatterjee. I don’t know if I will ever get a chance.

What would you say your strengths are?

Sumi: I think my dedication to the project, my way of diving deep into the character and my love for the character I portray. In my eyes, they are the most important things to me.

Tell us about your weaknesses

Sumi: I think sometimes I undermine myself. People still know me by the characters that I portrayed.

Isn’t that a good thing?

Sumi: Well yes. Maybe sometimes but i want people to know my name as well.

Is there a final message you would like to share with the readers before concluding?

Sumi: People should understand that we are normal human beings. Would our choices differ if we could experience the world from someone else's perspective by stepping into their shoes? I think we might. We should all help each other and make our country a wonderful place to enjoy and live peacefully.
