In a shocking turn of events, Dariush Mehrjui, a prominent figure in Iran's 'New Wave' film movement, has been brutally murdered along with his wife, Vahideh Mohammadifar.
The news has sent shockwaves not only through Iran but also across the global film industry. Renowned actress Jaya Ahsan expressed her profound grief, sharing a poignant image of Mehrjui, capturing the somber atmosphere that has enveloped the community.
Jaya stated, "Disturbing news from around the world. My heart feels heavy. Amidst it all, a piece of news struck me with absolute horror. Who could have committed such a heinous act against the celebrated Iranian director Dariush Mehrjui? Not only him, but his wife too fell victim to this brutality. With all the extraordinary cinema he brought to Iran, elevating it on the global stage, who could have fathomed such a cruel adversary? Even in death, Dariush Mehrjui's presence will forever resonate within our hearts."
Prior to this, filmmaker Mostofa Sarwar Farooki had expressed his profound sorrow upon hearing of Mehrjui's demise. He stated, "What a horrifying piece of news! Dariush Mehrjui, a trailblazer in Iran's ‘New Wave’ web film movement, found in a fatal state due to a stabbing at his residence. His wife, Wahideh, has also been slain. Terrifying!"
It is worth noting that on the night of October 14, when Mehrjui's daughter, Mona Mehrjui, arrived at their home in Tehran to visit her parents, she discovered them in a lifeless state, both victims of a stabbing. Four individuals have been identified in connection with this incident, with two of them already apprehended, according to Iran's news agency ISNA.
