Fans of the beloved animated franchise “Despicable Me” are in for a treat as the first trailer for the upcoming “Despicable Me 4” has been unveiled.

Scheduled for release on July 3, 2024, the film continues the adventures of Gru, Lucy, the girls and of course, the iconic Minions.

Voiced by Steve Carrell, Gru, a reformed super villain turned family man, takes centre stage once again. The voice cast also features familiar names such as Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, Steve Coogan, Chris Renaud, Dana Gaier, and Pierre Coffin reprising their roles from previous instalments.

Excitingly, the fourth movie introduces new characters voiced by Will Ferrell, Joey King, Sofia Vergara, Stephen Colbert, Chloe Fineman, and Madison Polan. Ferrell portrays Maxime Le Mal, a formidable new adversary for Gru with world-domination aspirations, while Vergara lends her voice to Valentina, Maxime's glamorous and dangerous girlfriend. The plot takes a new turn with the addition of Gru and Lucy's baby boy, Gru Jr.

The “Despicable Me” franchise, which made its debut in 2010, has been a global phenomenon. The third film, released in 2017, surpassed the 'Shrek' series as the highest-grossing animated film franchise, raking in over $1 billion at the box office.

A significant part of the franchise's charm lies in the Minions, the yellow, gibberish-speaking creatures who aid Gru in his adventures. The Minions have become pop culture icons, even starring in their own spinoff movies, “Minions” and “Minions: The Rise of Gru.”

Chris Meledandri, co-founder of Illumination, serves as the producer, with Chris Renaud, director of the first two films, and Patrick Delage, making his feature debut, helming the project. The screenplay is crafted by Mike White, known for his work on films like “School of Rock” and “The Emoji Movie.”

As the teaser hints at more escapades for the beloved characters, fans are eager to see if “Despicable Me 4” can recapture the franchise's momentum following the success of “Despicable Me 3.”
