Eight talented women artists of Bangladesh who have delivered outstanding solo performances in theatres were awarded with the “Nari Natya Sammanna 2024” award at Mahila Samiti Auditorium on Friday.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Kanchkhela Repertory Theatre has organised a theatre festival and an awarding ceremony “Teer-Kanchkhela Natya Utsab and Nari Natya Sammanna 2024” to honour the most promising female thespians.

This year, eight most promising theatre personalities of 2023 –Rosey Siddiqui (Dhaka Theatre), Momena Chowdhury (Shunyon Repertory Theatre), Nazneen Hasan Chumki (Desh Natok), Shamsi Ara Sayeka (Padatik Natya Sangsad), Tonima Hamid (Natyachakra), Hasina Safina Banu Urmi (Saptarshi Theatre), Juyena Shabnam (Swapnadal), Nowshin Islam Disha (Byatikrom Natyagosthi)  have been awarded.

Veteran actress Dolly Zahur inaugurated the three-day theatre festival on Friday, while Education and Cultural Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury handed over the award as chief guest. Renowned actress Tarana Halim, Afroza Parveen, Falguni Hamid, and Managing Director of City Group Jafar Uddin Siddiqui were present as special guests.

Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury in his speech said, “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is encouraging women as an example of women power. Under her influence and leadership, nowadays, Bangladesh has set an example in the world in the empowerment of women.”

Remembering the contribution of all women in the world with respect, he further said, “Theatre plays a vital role in the progress of Bangladesh like other branches of culture. So, to ensure equal participation of women, we need to assure investment.”

After the award ceremony, the Theatre Factory staged the play "Asharrshy Pratham Dibose" on the first day. Prachyanat staged "Agunjatra” on the second day. The festival will conclude with Anuswar's "Harmachis Cleopatra" today.
