Exhibition ‘Death Sentence’ begins at Bengal Shilpalay on Thursday

A month long group art exhibition titled “Death Sentence” curated by Jewel A Rob, under the Bengal Foundation’s Subir Choudhury Curatorial Practice Grant, will begin today at the Bengal Shilpalay, Dhanmondi in the capital.

Works by five artists Anisuzzaman Sohel, Emran Sohel, Promotesh Das Pulak, Najmun Nahar Keya and Shimul Datta, will be featured in the show.

Francois Grosjean, Director of Alliance Francaise de Dhaka, will inaugurate the exhibition as chief guest today, while Mustafa Zaman, artist and art-writer will be present on the occasion as the special guest.

The Curatorial Practice Grant was initiated by Bengal Foundation in 2015 to commemorate Subir Choudhury, the visionary director, artist and arts organizer. Invited through an open call, Jewel A. Rob’s research proposal was selected for the Subir Choudhury Curatorial Practice Grant (SCCPG) in 2018. Despite some setbacks, not least of all the disruption due to COVID 19, we are delighted to be able to finally present the exhibition titled “Death Sentence” curated and researched by Jewel A Rob.

The concept of the “Death Sentence” project is crafted around the curator’s empathetic perspective and reaction to artists’ engagement in the design and aesthetics of weapons and war machines. It investigates historical processes and the curiously inverted relationship between death and aesthetics. The thought-provoking show draws on the practice of 5 artists who have looked at the questions critically. We hope that show will allow us to reflect on deeply troubling contemporary concerns.

The exhibition will remain open to all everyday 4 pm to 8pm except on Sundays, until March 30.
