In a highly anticipated release, "Godzilla Minus One," the 37th instalment in Japan's legendary monster movie franchise, stormed into U.S. theatres on Friday, garnering an overwhelmingly positive response from critics.

ReelViews critic James Berardinelli praises the film, stating, “Godzilla Minus One isn’t just a good Godzilla movie. It’s an excellent Godzilla movie – arguably among the best ever to grace the screen.”

The film, written and directed by renowned CG animator and VFX artist Takashi Yamazaki, transports the giant Kaiju back to its origins, set against the backdrop of post-World War II Japan. The stellar cast includes Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki.

Released domestically on November 3, Godzilla Minus One coincides with the 70th anniversary of the iconic monster franchise that began with Toho Studio’s "Godzilla" in 1954. Notably, it marks the first fully Japanese-made title in the series since 2016. The film has already grossed over $20 million in its home country.

Critics draw favourable comparisons between Godzilla Minus One and recent Hollywood franchise sequels, highlighting its distinction from both superhero disappointments and blockbuster hits.

As fans and moviegoers alike celebrate the 70-year legacy of Godzilla, the latest instalment appears to have successfully captured the essence of the beloved Kaiju, earning its place among the franchise's finest cinematic achievements.
