This project takes viewers back centuries before the events of House of the Dragon, chronicling the Targaryen family's brutal conquest of the continent.
The story follows Aegon Targaryen, a ruthless invader who, alongside his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya, unleashed their fearsome dragons upon Westeros. Their campaign proved successful, uniting six of the Seven Kingdoms under Targaryen rule – all within two bloody years. Only the resilient nation of Dorne managed to resist the fiery onslaught.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Aegon's Conquest is a "back to basics" approach to Martin's fantasy universe. However, given the sprawling complexities of the original series, what "back to basics" truly means in this context remains to be seen.
The series is penned by rising screenwriter Mattson Tomlin, known for his work on The Batman and its upcoming sequel. His diverse portfolio includes action films like BRZRKR and even an animated Terminator series.
This isn't the only Thrones spinoff in development. House of the Dragon, a prequel focusing on the Targaryen civil war, returns for its second season this summer. Additionally, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, based on Martin's novellas, begins production this year.
While the network declined to comment, the development of Aegon's Conquest adds another exciting chapter to the ever-expanding Game of Thrones saga. Will it capture the magic of the original? Only time, and fire, will tell.
