Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has fled the country amid escalating protests led by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
In a statement released from her undisclosed location in neighbouring India, Hasina claimed to have resigned to prevent further bloodshed. She accused unnamed forces of attempting to seize power through violence, targeting students in the process.
In response to this message, prominent Bangladeshi musician Prince Mahmud took to Facebook on Sunday, August 11, to express his discontent. Addressing Sheikh Hasina directly, Mahmud wrote, "Please, stop sending these messages, Apa. You don't love anyone except your own family."
He went on to accuse the former prime minister of leading the country to the brink of destruction, stating, "Your arrogance, stubbornness, and pride have brought Bangladesh to the brink of destruction. You have left us in a death trap. You have incited communal violence. Your tears now feel like 'crocodile tears.' I don't trust you. Stop speaking, just stop…"
Mahmud, who has been a vocal supporter of the student movement from its inception, added in the comments section of his post, "Hand over the country to the new generation, apologize, and step aside. Don't play with us anymore…"
In a related development, Sheikh Hasina's son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, denied that his mother had issued any statements either before or after leaving Dhaka. He shared this information in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday night.
