In a recent press conference held at Kazi Nazrul Institute in Dhanmondi, prominent figures, including Kazi Nazrul Islam's granddaughter, Mistee Kazi, expressed strong condemnation against the alleged distortion of the legendary poet's iconic song, “Karar Oi Louho Kopat.”

The controversy revolves around the accusation that renowned Bangladeshi musician AR Rahman distorted the rendition of Kazi Nazrul Islam's song during the soundtrack production of an unspecified project.

Mistee Kazi, speaking on behalf of Nazrul's family, vehemently criticized Rahman for altering the essence of a song that has inspired millions and played a significant role in Bangladesh's history.

“I am a Bangladeshi citizen now. I cannot allow disrespect towards my grandfather, Kazi Nazrul Islam. It's not about who distorted the song, but rather, why someone would present his work in such a manner! Kazi Nazrul is a globally acclaimed poet, the national poet of Bangladesh,” said Mistee Kazi during the press conference.

The controversy surfaced when AR Rahman, a prominent figure in the music industry, allegedly altered the composition of “Karar Oi Louho Kopat.” Mistee Kazi expressed her disappointment, saying, “We do not need to know who did it or how; we need to know why Kazi Nazrul Islam's work was treated this way.”

During the conference, Mistee Kazi urged for strong action against the distortion, stating, “Severe condemnation is not enough; we need decisive steps against such musical distortion. I appeal to our beloved Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to take strict measures. This is not the time for criticism but for protest and action.”

The controversy has brought together various cultural personalities, scholars and researchers, united in their stance against the alleged distortion of Nazrul's masterpiece. They emphasized the need to preserve the integrity of Nazrul and Rabindranath Tagore, considering them as the soul of Bengali culture.

In response to the controversy, AR Rahman has not issued a public statement. The Kazi Nazrul Institute and its associates have called for unity among Nazrul enthusiasts to address the issue and ensure the preservation of the poet's musical legacy.
