Renowned actor Ilias Kanchan has stepped down from the newly formed jury board for the 2023 National Film Awards. Citing a busy schedule, Kanchan has officially informed the board of his inability to serve.
Confirming his resignation, Kanchan stated, “I attended a meeting to inform them about my unavailability. They requested me to stay, but due to my commitments, I couldn't.”
He further explained, “While serving as the president of the Artistes' Association, I often faced similar time constraints. I simply don't have the time for these commitments. The jury board can function well with any experienced individual. There's no need for Ilias Kanchan specifically. I was also asked to review films through a pen drive, which would involve watching about 58 films. I informed them that I wouldn't have the time for it.”
Kanchan had initially been informed about a separate committee being formed for film-related matters, where he was expected to be included. However, he was later added to the jury board. Upon receiving the official notification, he requested a written confirmation but was surprised to find himself included in the jury board.
“I have been working for the 'Safe Road Campaign' for the past 32 years. This is something I am passionate about and want to dedicate my time to,” Kanchan said.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had issued a notification on September 15, reconstituting the jury board for the 2023 National Film Awards. The board, comprising 13 members, was chaired by the Additional Secretary (Films) of the Ministry.
Apart from Ilias Kanchan, other members of the jury board included director Zahidur Rahim Anjan, musician Prince Mahmud, cinematographer Barkat Hossain, actress Aupee Karim, singer Nancy and Assistant Professor, SM Imran Hossain.
