In commemoration of the 98th birthday of educationist, playwright, and laureate Munier Chowdhury which was observed on November 27, theatre troupe Theatre is going to honour two theatre practitioners this year through the Munier Chowdhury and Mohammad Zakaria Smriti Padak.

This year, Theatre Director and Researcher Kamaluddin Nilu have been selected to receive the prestigious Munier Chowdhury Sammanona, while the Mohammad Zakaria Smriti Padak will be bestowed upon the promising young Theatre Director Bakar Bakul.

The recipients will receive BDT 50,000 and BDT 25,000, respectively, as award money courtesy of IFIC Bank. The date of the award ceremony programme will be disclosed later.

On the other hand, to mark the occasion, Theatre Angan will stage a biographical play titled ‘Munier Chowdhury’ today at 7 pm at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Segun Bagicha in the capital.

The play, written and directed by Prabir Dutt, chronicles the eventful life of the martyred scholar-playwright Munier Chowdhury and his involvements in all the major movements and developments in the country that took place between 1947 and 1971.

Besides Munier Chowdhury, the play also features real-life characters like his wife Lily Chowdhury, younger sister Ferdousi and writer-journalist Ranesh Dasgupta, among others.

The other cast of the play includes Mahbub Amin Mithu, Sabina Akhter, Rajib Ahmed, Jannatul Ferdous, Saiful Islam Sumon and others.
