Renowned Bangladeshi musician, film director, producer and lyricist Gazi Mazharul Anwar has passed away at a city hospital.

The lyricist was declared dead after he was brought to the United Hospital in Dhaka around 6:30am on Sunday, confirmed his son Upol and daughter-in-law Shahana Mirza.

Shahana Mirza said, “He had been suffering from acidity for the past few days. He was taken to a doctor yesterday (Saturday) for blood test and was scheduled to undergo more tests today (Sunday)."

Gazi Mazharul Anwar was born on February 22, 1943. He wrote numerous popular songs about freedom and patriotism. He received Bangladesh Ekushey Padak in 2002 and Independence Award in 2021. Received National Film Award five times.

The creator of numerous timeless songs has composed more than 20 thousand songs in various media including radio, television, and cinema for 60 years. Three songs written by him are in the list of 20 greatest Bengali songs of all time compiled by BBC Bangla.

Some of his timeless songs are "Joy Bangla, Banglar Joy", "Achen Amar Moktar", "Ektara Tui Desh Kotha Bol Re Abar Bol", "Ganer Khatay Swaralipi Likhe", "Shudhu Gaan Geye Porichoy", "Ei Mon Tomake Dilam", "Chokher Nojore Emoni Dilam", etc.
