Memorial lecture, film screening to remember Tareque Masud

Tomorrow marks the 12th death anniversary of celebrated filmmaker Tareque Masud and cinematographer Ashfaque Munier, popularly known as Mishuk Munier.

Marking the day, the Moviyana Film Society and the Tareque Masud Memorial Trust will jointly organise an event titled ‘Tareque Masud Memorial Lecture 2023’ with the theme ‘Identity politics and Bangladeshi films’ tomorrow at 6:30 pm at the National Art Plaza Auditorium of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Segun Bagicha in the capital.

Film researcher Professor Fahmidul Haq, sound designer Nahid Masud and chairman of the Tareque Masud Memorial Trust and Moviyana Film Society’s President Belayat Hossain Mamun will participate in the memorial discussion. 

Before discussion, Tareque Masud’s film ‘Adam Surat’ about the Bangladeshi painter Sheikh Mohammed Sultan will be screened. ‘Adam Surat’ is the first film of Masud. It is a documentary about Bangladeshi painter Sheikh Mohammed Sultan (well known as ‘SM Sultan’). Masud started the film in 1982 and completed after seven years later. By that time, he had met and married the Chicago-born Catherine Shapere (well known as Catherine Masud), with whom he formed a close working relationship until his death.

Born on December 6, 1956, in Faridpur, Tareque was involved with the film society movement in the late 70s. His much-acclaimed film 'Matir Moyna' earned the FIPRESCI Prize in 2002 Cannes Film Festival and became Bangladesh's first film to compete for the Academy Award for the best foreign-language film in the same year.

In addition to filmmaking, Tareque was also a pioneer of the independent film movement in Bangladesh. He was a founding member of the Short Film Forum, the leading platform for independent filmmakers. He organised the country’s first International Short and Documentary Film Festival In 1988.

His other major films are ‘Runway’, ‘Ontorjatra’ ‘Muktir Gaan’ and the unfinished 'Kagojer Phul'.
