At the Oscar Wilde Awards in Los Angeles, former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan expressed his pick for the next iconic spy to take on the role of 007, according to Variety.

Brosnan, known for his portrayal of Bond from 1995 to 2002, suggested fellow Irish actor Cillian Murphy as a perfect fit for the role. Brosnan's endorsement of Murphy came during an interview with the BBC at the event celebrating Irish talent.

Brosnan praised Murphy, stating, "Cillian would do a magnificent job as James Bond on His Majesty’s Secret Service." Murphy, who was present at the awards ceremony, has garnered significant acclaim for his recent performance in "Oppenheimer," where he portrayed J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb.

Murphy's stellar performance has positioned him as a strong contender for the Best Actor Oscar at the upcoming ceremony, having already won prestigious awards such as the BAFTA, Golden Globe, and SAG trophies this awards season.

Despite Brosnan's endorsement, Murphy remained modest about the possibility of taking on the role of Bond, stated, "I’m a bit old for that." He added, "I will say I think that ship has sailed." However, with his schedule currently open following his recent film premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, Murphy could potentially consider the role if offered.

Speculation regarding the next James Bond has been rampant since Daniel Craig retired from the role in 2021.

While names like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Regé-Jean Page, and Henry Cavill have been suggested, no official announcement has been made regarding Craig's successor. Brosnan's endorsement of Murphy adds another intriguing possibility to the on-going debate surrounding who will don the iconic tuxedo next.
