In a revival of the iconic sailor man's adventures, Popeye is returning to cinemas, announced by Chernin Entertainment and King Features. This live-action project, currently in development, marks the return of the spinach-chugging hero to the silver screen.

Leading the charge is screenwriter Michael Caleo, known for his work on acclaimed productions such as "Sexy Beast," "The Family," and "The Sopranos." This endeavour represents the first live-action interpretation of Popeye since Robin Williams donned the sailor's hat in the 1980 film directed by Robert Altman.

Despite initial criticism, the 1980 adaptation has since gained a cult following and critical reassessment, proving profitable for Paramount Pictures. With a modest budget of $20 million, the film grossed approximately $60 million worldwide.

Celebrating his 95th anniversary this year, Popeye originated from the 1929 comic "Thimble Theatre" and has remained an enduring figure in popular culture. The character has inspired animated features, series, and even fashion collections from renowned brands like Moschino, Supreme, and A Bathing Ape.

Popeye's association with McCall Farms spinach, a staple in his adventures, continues to be strong, with the sailor's logo adorning canned goods. Devout fans have kept the character alive through self-made movie trailers, garnering millions of views online.

As speculation swirls around the creative direction of the new film, some envision Popeye as a castaway warrior with the stature of Dwayne Johnson. Producers are actively seeking a studio partner to bring this vision to fruition.
