Renowned Bangladeshi film director Syed Salahuddin Zaki, recipient of the National Film Award and the Ekushey Padak, passed away on Monday, at 11:53pm, in United Hospital in Gulshan.

The director was 77 years old at the time of his death. The news was confirmed by Channel i Managing Director Faridur Reza Sagar.

On Monday night, at 10:00pm, he suddenly experienced a deterioration in his physical condition. He was promptly taken to United Hospital in Gulshan, Dhaka. Upon admission, attending physicians declared the acclaimed filmmaker, known for the iconic film 'Ghuddi', deceased.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of film director Syed Salahuddin Zaki. In a message of condolence, the minister said Zaki will ever be remembered through his works.

The minster also prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

Celebrities and members of the country’s film fraternity, along with Zaki’s close acquaintances, have been sharing their grief and love for the renowned filmmaker on social media platforms as news of his death broke

Born on August 26, 1946, Syed Salahuddin Zaki leaves behind a son and a daughter, both residing in Canada. It is known that a decision regarding the burial of their father will be made after their return to the country.

Apart from being a celebrated film director, Zaki was also a prolific writer and playwright. In 1980, he captured the hearts of audiences with his critically acclaimed debut film 'Ghuddi'. He was equally revered for his film critiques. In the late 1990s, he also served as the Chief Executive of Bangladesh Television.

Zaki directed several films including 'Lal Benaroshi' and 'Ayna Bibir Pala'. His exceptional dialogue writing in the film 'Ghuddi' earned him the National Film Award. In addition, in 2021, he was honored with the Ekushey Padak for his outstanding contributions to the film industry.

Recently, he completed work on two films, 'Aparajeyo Eka' and 'Krantikal.' However, due to age-related health issues, Syed Salahuddin Zaki could not keep up with his former self. Even if he wanted to, he could not go to the film sets that often.

The passing of this visionary filmmaker marks a significant loss to the Bangladeshi film fraternity. His contributions will be remembered and cherished by generations to come.
