Rabindra Sangeet legend Sumitra Sen passes away

Indian iconic singer and Rabindra Sangeet exponent Sumitra Sen passed away at her residence in Kolkata, West Bengal, in the early hours of Tuesday. She was 89.

Her daughter, Rabindra Sangeet singer Srabani Sen, on Tuesday morning took to her Facebook handle to share the tragic news. "Aaj Maa bhore chole gelen,” she wrote.

Sumitra had been suffering from age-related ailments for a long time, reports The Times of India.

According to reports, the legendary singer was rushed to a private hospital on December 29 as her condition deteriorated. However, she was brought home later.

She had been undergoing treatment for severe bronchopneumonia. Her condition got worse on Monday and she breathed her last on Tuesday.

Sumitra Sen's daughters Srabani Sen and Indrani Sen are also Rabindra Sangeet icons and have continued their mother's legacy.

Sumitra who was honoured with the Sangeet Mahasamman award by the West Bengal government in 2012 enthralled music lovers for decades with Rabindra Sangeets like “Megh Bolechhe Jabo Jabo,” “Tomari Jharnatalar Nirjone,” “Sakhi Bhabona Kahare Bole,” “Achhe Dukho Achhe Mrityu” to name a few.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condoled the veteran singer's demise saying, ''I am deeply saddened by the sudden demise of Sumitra Sen, who had enthralled the audience for decades.

“I had a close relationship with her for a long time. The West Bengal government had awarded her 'Sangeet Mahasamman' in 2012. Her passing away is an irreparable loss to the music world. My sincere condolences to Sumitra di’s daughters Indrani and Srabani, and her fans.''
