'Surongo,' the 2023 Bangladeshi crime thriller, is a cinematic gem that promises an exhilarating journey from start to finish. Under the visionary direction of Raihan Rafi and featuring a stellar cast including Afran Nisho and Toma Mirza, this film weaves a spine-chilling narrative of love, betrayal and vengeance that will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout.

Inspired by the daring 2014 real-life incident of the Sonali Bank vault break-in in Kishoreganj, director Rafi skillfully reimagines the story, creating a narrative that is both engaging and distinctive. 'Surongo' boasts an array of qualities that will captivate cinephiles and crime-thriller enthusiasts alike, offering an experience that's not to be missed.

The heart of the story revolves around the enigmatic Masud, portrayed brilliantly by Nisho. 'Surongo' delves deep into his emotions and unwavering devotion to his wife, Moyna, brought to life by the captivating Toma. As the plot unfolds, Masud's determination to fulfill Moyna's desires takes center stage. The intrigue heightens as Masud's overseas journey to secure a better future ensnares him in a web of deception and infidelity, involving his supposed friend, Zahir, portrayed dynamically by Mostafa Monwar

Upon Masud's poignant return to Bangladesh, the film crescendos into a gripping confrontation that lays bare the true reasons behind Moyna's departure. Driven by her greed, Masud embarks on a daring mission – tunneling into a bank's vault in a bold attempt to win back the love he lost.

While the film's first half skillfully establishes the plot, allowing viewers to empathise with Masud's struggles, the narrative takes an exhilarating turn post-intermission, delivering a rollercoaster of emotions.

One performance that stands out is Shahiduzzaman Selim's portrayal of the relentless police officer pursuing Masud. Though his screen time is limited, Selim's impeccable delivery, magnetic presence and memorable dialogues inject electric energy into the film whenever he appears.

Director Rafi masterfully creates a dark and gritty atmosphere that harmonises seamlessly with the film's tone. The meticulous set design and authentic locations highlight the diverse beauty of Bangladesh, while Sumon Sarker's cinematography paints each frame with skill and flair, capturing action and drama in all their glory.

Noteworthy for its striking cinematography, evocative colour grading, and meticulous set design, 'Surongo' is a testament to the dedication of its crew and their meticulous pre-production planning. The film not only relies on technical brilliance but also offers exceptional performances. Nisho as Masud delivers a powerhouse performance, particularly in scenes pulsating with raw emotion and fierce determination.

However, it is important to note that 'Surongo' is not suitable for sensitive audiences or younger viewers. Scenes of violence, bloodshed, and nudity make it a choice for mature audiences. It is unfortunate that this aspect was not as clearly communicated in the film's promotion. Additionally, with a runtime of 2 hours and 30 minutes, the film's duration might test the patience of some viewers. There were also minor script issues that I personally observed.

'Surongo' stands as a cinematic triumph, deserving of praise for its brilliance and ingenuity. A heart-pounding thriller that challenges the mind and stirs the heart, it's a testament to the limitless potential of Bangladeshi cinema.
