Today, Bangladesh stands in solemn tribute to a legend whose legacy has left an indelible mark upon its cultural tapestry. It marks the first anniversary of the passing of Gazi Mazharul Anwar, a revered lyricist, a valiant freedom fighter, and the esteemed recipient of the Ekushey Padak, the nation's highest civilian honour. Anwar, renowned for his profound contributions to music and cinema, departed from our world on this day, one year ago.

A harmonious odyssey of 20,000 songs

Gazi Mazharul Anwar embarked on his musical odyssey in 1964 when he penned his maiden compositions for Radio Pakistan. From those nascent days, his lyrical genius radiated brilliantly, swiftly propelling him to the forefront of the music industry. Remarkably, three of his compositions found their place among the "Best 20 Bangla Songs of All Time," as recognised by the BBC.

His enduring creations include masterpieces such as ‘Joy Bangla, Banglar Joy’, ‘Akasher Haate Achhe Ek Rash Nil’, ‘Achhen Amar Moktar’, ‘Ektara Tui Desher Kotha Bol Re Ebar Bol’, ‘Ganer Khatay Swaralipi Likhe’, ‘Shudhu Gaan Geye Parichay’, ‘Ei Mon Tomake Dilam’, ‘Chokher Najar Emni Koira’, and many more, each resonating with audiences to this very day.

A multifaceted virtuoso

Gazi Mazharul Anwar's artistic reach extended far beyond the realm of songwriting. He ventured into the domains of television and cinema, becoming an indispensable presence in both. Mazharul made pivotal contributions to Bangladesh Television's (BTV) music and drama productions right from its inception.

His cinematic influence blossomed when he made his directorial debut with "Nantu Ghotok" in 1982, heralding a glittering filmmaking career encompassing 41 films. Notable works like "Churiwala" (2001), "Kokhono Megh Kokhono Brishti" (2003), and "Sondhi" (1987) underscore his multifaceted brilliance.

A family's endearing tribute

Today, Mazharul's family and loved ones fondly remember him. His son, Sarfaraz Anwar Upol, and daughter, Dithi Anwar, along with family and friends, have initiated charitable endeavours in his honour. They have commenced by distributing meals to orphans throughout Dhaka, a poignant reflection of his unwavering commitment to societal welfare.

In the evening, a special Milad Mahfil and prayer session will be held at the Agargaon Autistic Centre, followed by a prayer session at his final resting place, Banani Graveyard, where family and well-wishers will gather to commemorate the departed soul.

The shadow of a father

Sarfaraz Anwar Upol, Mazharul's son, reflects upon the past year with profound emotions. He shares, "There's no doubt in my mind that my father's presence still lingers, casting a benevolent shadow over our lives. I cannot fathom how this past year has unfolded without him. Life without him feels profoundly challenging and lonely. I implore everyone to pray for my Baba."

Dithi, his daughter, adds, "My father was cherished deeply by all; I witnessed it firsthand. Both familiar faces and strangers eagerly sought his presence. Ammu has been our constant pillar of strength. Yet, those who've lost their fathers can truly understand the ache of this void. I earnestly beseech everyone to remember my Baba today, on the first anniversary of his passing."

A resounding tribute across the airwaves

To honour the memory of this lyrical luminary, several Bangladeshi television channels, including state-run Bangladesh Television (BTV), and private channels Desh TV, Asian TV, and Gaan Bangla, have dedicated special programmes to celebrate the life and work of Gazi Mazharul Anwar.

In a distinctive broadcast on Channel i, Dithi will present songs penned by her father as part of the "Gaan Diye Shuru" programme, adding another layer to the tribute. Furthermore, various television channels, including Bangladesh Television (BTV), Desh TV, Asian TV, and Global TV, are also joining the homage by broadcasting special programmes dedicated to his memory.
