Theatre Art Unit staged its 36th production ‘Madhab Malanchi’ at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), Segun Bagicha in the capital yesterday.
Originally written by Bibhash Chakraborty the play is based on Momenshahi Gitika. Rokeya Rafique Baby has directed the play for the evening.
The drama revolves around the relationship between Madhab, the son of Durlabh Raja, and Malanchi who was the daughter of Balaraja.
The play begins with Sutradhar, narrating the story of Durlabh Raja’s youngest son Madhab. Durlabh Raja was father of five sons and gives the responsibility of raising Madhab to his eldest son’s wife Chandraban after the death of the queen.
The conflict begins among the brothers over the succession of the throne and they plan to kill Madhab. Thus, to protect Madhab, Chandraban sends him to another country. There under Balaraja’s shelter Madhab grows up into a fine responsible young man.
On the other hand Balaraja’s daughter Malanchi is about to marry, but Malanchi and Madhab fall in love with each other. Malanchi gives Madhab a condition that if he can stay with Manpabaner Nao under the Gurguri tree in the night, she will leave her father’s kingdom.
Madhab accepts the condition but his luck does not favour him and Malanchi loses him. Thus, the story continues with Malanchi’s search for Madhab.
