‘Top Boy’ wins big, surprises as ‘Succession’, ‘Black Mirror’ shut out

The BAFTA TV Awards saw some major upsets on Sunday night, with established players like "The Crown" and "Black Mirror" going home empty-handed.

Even "Succession" only managed one award, for Matthew Macfadyen's supporting actor performance. Macfadyen wasn't even there to receive it, prompting presenter Helena Bonham Carter to jokingly abscond with the trophy, promising to get it to him.

The international category threw another curveball. Frontrunners "Succession," "Beef," and "The Bear" were all bested by the little-known French series "Class Act."  A surprised lead actor Laurent Lafitte urged the audience to seek out his show, acknowledging its relative obscurity.

In the acting categories, Jasmine Jobson won supporting actress for "Top Boy," which also triumphed in the best drama series category, beating out "Happy Valley," "The Gold," and "Slow Horses."  Timothy Spall won leading actor for "The Sixth Commandment," which also won limited drama. Spall offered a self-deprecating acceptance speech, calling acting "a stupid thing."

"Strictly Come Dancing" took home the entertainment award, while the reality program "Squid Game: The Challenge" was another winner.

Last year's Eurovision Song Contest, held in the UK, won the live event coverage award, with co-host Hannah Waddingham accepting alongside the production team, according to Variety.

Sarah Lancashire won Leading Actress for her role in "Happy Valley." The show also claimed the most memorable moment award, for a scene featuring Lancashire's character facing off against David Beckham (whose Netflix documentary "Beckham" included a teasing reference to his wife Victoria's working-class background).

The ceremony was hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan.
