Actress Sreela Majumdar, a favorite among esteemed filmmakers including Mrinal Sen, Shyam Benegal and Prakash Jha, passed away at her residence in Kolkata on Saturday, as confirmed by her family.

The 65-year-old had been battling cancer for the past three years. She is survived by her husband and son.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences, praising Majumdar as a powerful actor who left an indelible mark on the Indian film industry. Banerjee remarked, "It is a big loss for the Bengal film industry, and we shall miss her stellar presence. My condolences to her family."

Sreela Majumdar garnered critical acclaim for her notable roles in Mrinal Sen's films such as "Ekdin Pratidin", 1980, "Kharij", 1982, and "Akaler Sandhane", 1981. Her significant contributions also extended to Shyam Benegal's "Mandi", 1983, Prakash Jha's "Damul", 1985 and Utpalendu Chakraborty's "Chokh", 1983.

Majumdar's final film, "Palan" by Kaushik Ganguly, a sequel to "Ekdin Pratidin," received widespread acclaim last year.

In her career, she acted in a total of 43 films. Notably, Majumdar was recognized for her sensitive voice dubbing for Aishwarya Rai in Rituparno Ghosh's film "Chokher Bali", 2003.

Rituparna Sengupta, a younger colleague in the industry, mourned Majumdar's passing, saying, "She had delivered so many memorable performances under the direction of filmmakers like Mrinal Sen and others. She could have been utilised more by the industry."
