‘Zainul Utsab’ begins at DU

A three-day ‘Zainul Utsab 2023’ began on Friday at the Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA) of Dhaka University (DU) marking the 109th birth anniversary of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin.

DU Vice-Chancellor Prof ASM Maksud inaugurated the programme as the chief guest. Earlier DU vice chancellor paid tribute to Zainul Abedin placing a floral wreath at the grave of the master artist in the morning.

Best known for his sketches of the Bengal famine of 1943, Zainul Abedin also spearheaded the establishment of the FFA of Dhaka University.

"The Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University, an institution built by Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin, has given birth to many prominent artists and continues to play an important role in the development of art and culture in the country. This institution continues to carry the unique identity of Bengali art, culture and ethnicity." DU VC said in his speech.

Prof Abdus Satter and artist Kazi Gias Uddin were awarded ‘Zainul Sammanna-2023’ for special contributions to Art Education and Art practice.

Besides, Supriya Kumar Ghosh,a student of the Faculty of Fine Arts, received the ‘Zainul Swarna Padak’ award for the best artwork selected at the Annual Art Exhibition. Following the awards ceremony, ‘Zainul fair’ and ‘Crafts fair’ were inaugurated at the FFA.

Fine Art faculty dean Prof Nisar Hossain presided over the programme while Emeritus Prof Abul Hashem Khan, Emeritus Prof Rafiqun Nabi, Engineer Moinul Abedin, son of Shilpacharya, Bangladesh Folk and Crafts Foundation Director Kazi Nurul Islam and CMO of BKash Mir Nawat Ali spoke, among others.

The fair organised by the Bangladesh Folk Art and Crafts Foundation, is scheduled to take place from 11am to 7pm.
