BJRI, Ctg veterinary uni jointly sequence Covid-19 genome, claims agri ministry

A joint research team of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) and Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University has sequenced the full genome of the novel coronavirus.

The Ministry of Agriculture made the claim in a press release issued on Thursday.

The Basic and Applied Research on Jute (BARJ) Project at BJRI and Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University have jointly completed full genome sequencing of seven specimens of coronavirus in Bangladesh, said the press release.

The genome information has been submitted to the GISAID (Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data) database as well as uploaded on the BJRI website.

Analysis of the revealed genome data shows that the sequences are similar to those in Saudi Arabia, Russia, Australia and the United States.

In addition, in the sequence of samples 511 and 517, the deletion of 345 base pairs was observed at the same place, which has been observed in some genomes of Singapore. In other words, the absence of the NS8 gene has been observed in those two genomes.

Further analysis of the unveiled genome sequence is currently underway. The uncovered sequence information is expected to be helpful in designing and evaluating diagnostic tests and identifying potential alternative approaches to ongoing outbreak.
