High-speed internet to reach all unions by Dec, says state minister

State Minister for Information and Communications Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak on Monday said that broadband internet would reach 4,500 unions across the country by December.

The state minister made the announcement while he was launching the Broadband Connectivity Establishment Project in Disadvantaged Areas. The project would be implemented at the union level.

He said that 1,200 unions would be connected to the internet through the Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited and 2,600 unions through optical fibre under the Info Sarkar 3 project of the Bangladesh Computer Council.

In addition, work is underway to bring 617 unions under optical fibre high-speed internet broadband connectivity. It is expected that the main infrastructural development work would be completed by 2021.

Palak said that the rest of 100 to 150 unions, in the remote area where carrying optical fibre is difficult, would be connected through Bangabandhu Satellite 01.

The state minister also said that a 'School of Future' and a lab would be set up in 300 parliamentary constituencies in the next few months to build skilled human resources in the country. In this school, everything would be operated by an online channel, he said.
