Bangladesh-India air travel bubble resumes next week

Special flights will start between Bangladesh and India from August 11 or 12 as part of the Air Bubble agreement between the two countries.

Diplomats, students and medical patients will be able to board the flights.

A virtual inter-ministerial meeting held between the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of has decided the flight issue on Wednesday outlining several conditions.

The conditions include that passengers who have taken two vaccine doses can stay in home quarantine for 14 days and those who have taken only one dose have to stay in institutional quarantine for two weeks.

According to the Air Bubble agreement, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, US-Bangla Airlines and Novo Air will operate their special flights to India, while Spice Jet, Indigo, Air India, Go Air and Air Vistara from India to Bangladesh.

Air Vice-Marshal M Mafidur Rahman, chairman of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, said several special flights will start from next week for emergency passengers as part of the previous Air Bubble agreement with some conditions.

“The airliner will fly with 50 per cent occupancy following health rules,” he said.

Earlier on July 14, Indian High Commission sent a request to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh which was later approved by the ministry.

According to the Indian High Commission, although undertaken for public health reasons at the time, the continued suspension of these air service arrangements and closures of land borders and limitations on passenger movement are now causing considerable difficulties for travel between the two countries.

Foreign secretary Masud Bin Momen said Bangladeshi citizens stuck in India and Indian officials used to move through only fixed land ports due to flight suspension.

“To ease the situation, a limited number of flights have been decided to be operated,” he said. Earlier in September 2020, different listed special airlines operated as per the Air Bubble agreement.
