Buyers in capital feel green chilli heat

Green chillies, an essential ingredient in households across the country, have become costlier. Skyrocketing prices of green chillies putting extra pressure on consumers.

The price of green chilli shot up to Tk 200-Tk 240 a kilogram in the capital’s kitchen markets over the week ending on Friday due to a supply shortage even after the government’s move to allow the import of Indian green chilli.

Last week, green chilli was sold at Tk 180-Tk 200 a kg in the city’s kitchen market.

However, the prices of most vegetables remain stable along with other essential commodities in the capital’s kitchen market.

Mohammed Shuruj Mia, a resident from city’s Raja bazaar area, has bought a half kg green chilli with a cost of Tk 110. He expressed his utter dissatisfaction with such an increased price.

“I had bought a single kg green chilli at a cost of Tk 80 just only ten days before but the prices of green chilli is now quite high. Since, it is an essential for our cooking, we have to buy it despite the unusual price hike,” said Shuruj Mia.

The demand for vegetables has also increased in the kitchen markets as many people have returned to the capital after the withdrawal of the lockdowns.

“As there is adequate supply of vegetable in the kitchen market, the prices of the vegetables are still stable in the market,” said Karim uddin, a retailer at the city’s Karwan bazar kitchen market.

He, however, said the prices of newly arrived winter vegetables such as bean is a bit high at the moment.

The price of tomato is at Tk 100-Tk110 a kilogram, bean is at Tk 140-Tk 160, carrot is at Tk 80-Tk100 as the prices of these three items remain unchanged in the capital’s kitchen markets.

During a visit to the city’s Karwan bazar, Taltola, Raja bazar and Sukrabad kitchen markets, it was found that the bean was being sold at at Tk 140-Tk160.

Besides, the prices of the snake gourds was Tk 35-Tk 40 a kg, while potato was being sold at Tk 20-Tk 25 a kg, Brinjal at Tk 40 kg, long

bean at Tk 50-Tk 70 a kg, lemon (4pc) at Tk 15, pumpkin at Tk 30 a kg, cucumber at Tk 35-Tk 40, bottle gourds at Tk 40-50 based on sizes, ladies finger at Tk 35-Tk 40 a kg, green banana (four pieces) at Tk 25-Tk 30, medium-sized pointed gourd at Tk 40-Tk 45 a kg, green papaya at Tk 30 a kg while bitter gourds at Tk45-Tk 50.

Meanwhile, one-liter bottle Soya bean oil was being sold at Tk 153 while a two-liter bottle’s price was Tk 300-Tk 308 and a five-liter bottle was being sold at Tk 700 Tk 728.

On the other hand, various fish vendors in the capital said that most of fishes were being sold as per previous prices and they were selling well after the lockdown was lifted.

However, different varieties of fish were being sold at a relatively lower prices at Raja bazar and Sukrabad bazar.

A medium sized Hilsa fish was selling at Tk 450-Tk 800 a kg, big size catfish at Tk 450-Tk 500 a kg, Boal fish at Tk 350-Tk 550 a kg, Koral fish at Tk 550 to Tk 600 a kg, Tilapia at Tk 140-Tk 160, Ruhita at Tk 250 to Tk 340, a kg based on size, Pabda fish at Tk 450-Tk 600 and Katla at Tk 250-Tk 300, among others.

On the other hand, Broiler chicken was being sold a little bit higher price at Tk 115-Tk 135 up by Tk 10 each kg

while layer and Sonali chicken were being sold as per previous week at Tk 220-Tk 240.

Beef was selling at Tk 580-Tk 600 while mutton at Tk 820-Tk 860 a kg.

Shohidul Islam at sukrabad said, “As many people have returned to Dhaka from the villages after th.e lifting the lockdown, the price of broiler chicken increased with higher demand.”

Sales in hotels and restaurants are also witnessing a slightly upwards trends.

The price of Rice is stable in the market. Katari rice was being sold at Tk 55-Tk 60 while Sorna rice at Tk 45-Tk 50, Paijam rice at Tk 48-Tk 50, Miniket at Tk 60-Tk 64, Basmati rice at Tk 65-Tk 70, BRRI-28 and 29 at Tk 50-Tk 55, bashful rice at Tk 60-Tk 65, Jeera rice at Tk 80-Tk 90 and Haski rice at Tk 50.

Besides, sugar was selling at Tk 72-Tk 75, lentils of different varieties at Tk 80-Tk 115 while onion was being sold a little bit lower price at Tk 45-Tk 50. Local garlic was being sold at Tk 60-Tk80 and Chinese one at Tk120-Tk 130, ;ocal Ginger at Tk 120 down from Tk 150, Foreign Genger at Tk 150, down from Tk 180 and unpacked flour at Tk 30 a kg and packed flour at Tk 35-Tk 40 a kg.
