Boat capsize kills 17 in Brahmanbaria

At least 17 people, including women and children, were killed when a boat carrying passengers capsized after colliding with a sand-laden trawler in Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila on Friday afternoon.

The incident took place at around 5:15 pm at Laiska Beel in Pattan Union of the upazila, confirmed
Brahmabaria Fire Service Deputy Assistant Director Towfiqul Islam Bhuiyan.

“Identities of the victims could not be confirmed immediately,” Brahmanbaria Superintendent of Police Mohammad Anisur Rahman told The
Business Post at 9:30pm.

Local said that the trawler with more than 100 passengers left for Anandabazar Ghat of Sadar Upazila from Champaknagar Ghat of Bijaynagar Upazila at 4.30 pm.

Brahmanbaria Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Emranul Islam said a rescue operation is being conducted to find any more survivors.

Talking to The Business Post, a female survivor said, “I managed to swim ashore following the collision but my son, nephew, and mother-in-law are still missing.”
