BTRC files 19,000 complaints with Facebook last year

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission has lodged around 19,000 complaints with popular social media Facebook in 2020.

Meanwhile, the contents of about five thousand of these alleged links have already been removed.

BTRC director general (Systems and Services) Brigadier General Nasim Parvez came up with such a disclosure while addressing a press conference on social media, content and image-related issues at his office on Monday.

At the press conference, in a written statement, he said, “BTRC had sent 18,836 complaints to Facebook in the year 2020. Of these, 13,948 links are still active while the remaining 4,888 links were so far removed.”

Apart from Facebook, BTRC lodged 431 complaints with YouTube. Of these, 369 are still active while 62 links were removed. Besides, a total of 1060 website links were also removed, said Nasim Parvez.

Those links and websites were shut down using a technical system called Cyber Threat Detection and Response.

Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar was virtually present at the press conference as the chief. Besides, BTRC chairman Shyam Sundar Sikder and other senior officials were also present at the conference.
