PM for not taking rent for cleaners’ flats

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday instructed the authorities concerned not to take any rent for flats to be allocated among cleaners of 66 municipalities across the country.

The prime minister’s instruction came up at the meeting of the executive committee of the National Economic Council after the proposal for a Tk 1,142.27 crore project to provide the cleaners of 66 municipalities with 3,040 flats, Planning Minister MA Mannan told reporters after the meeting.

“When Local Government Minister Md Tajul Islam placed the project at the meeting, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked not to take any rent from the cleaners of municipalities.

Then the minister proposed for taking some money for the maintenance of the buildings and the prime minister agreed with the proposal,” Mannan added.

The prime minister presided over the meeting through a videoconference from Ganabhaban.

The Local Government Engineering Department will implement the flats for the cleaners project by December 2024, the minister said, adding that the project fund will come from the government exchequer.

Under the project, 15.61 acres of land will be acquired and the flat complexes will feature sewerage, rainwater harvesting along with ground recharge facilities.
