Do not force employees to quit: BB warns banks

The Bangladesh Bank has warned banks not to force their employees to resign amid the Covid-19 pandemic and asked instead to reappoint them who faced forced resignation during the critical period.

The warning came as a delegation of the Association of Bankers, Bangladesh (ABB) met with the Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir on Monday.

As part of the initiative, the central bank has conducted inspection in six private commercial banks that have more allegations of job cuts.

The six are Eastern Bank, the City Bank, Dutch-Bangla Bank, Standard Bank, Mutual Trust Bank and BRAC Bank.

From January last year to August 9 this year, a total of 3,313 officials left their jobs from the six private banks.

Of them, 3070 have resigned voluntarily; 42 have been laid off and 201 removed, a high official of the central bank said, seeking anonymity.

The central bank is going to issue instruction to banks in the coming days that no employee has to quit without any specific reason, he added.

Contacted, Bangladesh Bank Executive Director and Spokesperson Md Serajul Islam said the BB warned banks not to force their employees to resign during the pandemic.

If the central bank finds proof of forced resignation against any banks, strict action will be taken against them, added Serajul.

The ABB delegation, however, apprised the BB that they did not force their officials to resign during the pandemic, according to the BB spokesperson.
