Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission and Rapid Action Battalion in a joint drive on Tuesday seized illegal Voice over Internet Protocol equipment worth Tk 30 lakh.
During the drive, the joint team arrested one person and seized 900 Teletalk SIM cards, three SIM boxes of 512 ports, two SIM boxes of 256 ports, seven laptops, five modems, and one switch used in illegally routing international calls.
The drive was conducted with the technical assistance of BTRC's National Telecommunication Monitoring Center (NTMC) members at Zakir Hossain Road in the capital’s Lalmatia area.
After the drive, BTRC officials said a syndicate of four people, including one Saudi expatriate, had been operating the illegal business for about one and half years.
The syndicate used to make illegal calls at a maximum rate of 2,30,000 minutes per day, resulting in about Tk 7 crore loss for the government, they said.
