The health authorities conducted a nationwide vaccination campaign on Tuesday, marking the 75th birth anniversary of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Health department spokesperson Md Shamsul Haque told The Business Post that the vaccination drive covered 6,000 centres, including 4,600 union parishads, 1,054 municipalities and all wards of city corporations. During this campaigning, residents of the slums and remote areas also got jabbed.

On Sunday, the government announced plans to inoculate 7.5 million people with Sinopharm doses marking the prime minister’s birthday. Health officials said that they administered the first dose to people aged above 25.

Roughly half a million people are being vaccinated daily. Including the added numbers, the campaign targeted to inoculate nearly eight million people in a single day.

“We could not count the number. We will continue the drive today if it fell short of the target,” Haque said.

So far, Bangladesh has received over 55.2 million doses of coronavirus vaccines from different sources.

Earlier, 4.5 million people were vaccinated during a weeklong mass vaccination campaign that kicked off on August 7.

Until Monday, 2,48,80,894 people received the first shot and 1,64,99,866 got their second doses. So far, 4,819,503 people have registered for receiving vaccines, DGHS sources said.

According to the health ministry, the government has decided to purchase 165 million more vaccine doses from China and other countries to intensify the inoculation campaign. Bangladesh set a target to vaccinate 80 per cent of the population by 2022 under an accelerated inoculation campaign, expecting receipt of required Covid-19 jabs within the estimated timeline, it added.

So far, the country has approved eight vaccines – Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, CoronaVac, Pfizer, Covishield, Sputnik V, AstraZeneca, and Sinopharm.
