DU students break into Amar Ekushey Hall

Residential students of Dhaka University’s Amar Ekushey Hall forcefully entered the dormitory around Friday noon.

The hall authorities are trying to cajole the students into vacating the dormitory.

Hall Provost Dr Ishtiaque M Syed said the students entered the hall by force and that they were trying to convince them to leave.

Coronavirus pandemic has forced Dhaka University’s residential halls to remain closed for more than 18 months. The DU administration decided to open the halls on October 5, but only for fourth-year honours and masters students who have received at least one dose of Covid vaccine and have the certificate to prove it.

Dhaka University students had previously demanded that the halls be opened from October 1. The authorities said the halls would reopen on October 5.

Some students said many of them are staying in messes and have to pay this month’s rent if the halls open on October 5 instead of October 1, which is why they wanted to enter the hall on Friday.
