The government will not take responsibility for consumers who got scammed by fraudulent e-commerce platforms across the country, said Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi.
Speaking to reporters after inaugurating an outlet of Diamond World in Rangpur on Friday, Tipu added, “Bangladesh has around 20,000 e-commerce companies and many people are involved in them.
“Consumers are getting scammed in hopes of buying products from such companies for much cheaper prices. They did not inform the government about this practice earlier, so why would it take responsibility?
He said the government has been working to take steps against e-commerce institutions that are involved in irregularities and corruption.
Tipu added, “The government wanted the e-commerce sector to flourish because it generates jobs in Bangladesh. Allegations of irregularities and corruption were made against around 10-12 e-commerce platforms across the country, and investigations are underway against them.”
Speaking about the onion price issue, the minister said, “Price of this kitchen ingredient increased due to heavy rainfall in India. Its prices in Bangladesh also increased because we depend on imports from this neighbouring country.
“Onion prices will drop here as soon as it drops in India. We have also launched a market monitoring system.”
The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry Vice president Mostafa Azad Chowdhury Babu; Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Alim; Rangpur Chamber of Commerce & Industries President Mostafa Sohrab Chowdhury Titu; and Awami League District unit President Momotazuddin Ahamed were present at the event.
