India is using Bangladesh as a gold smuggling route, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) Director General Md Abdour Rouf has said.

He said this at a press briefing on Monday to give information about the seizure of 104 gold bars worth around Tk 8.5 crore at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Sunday night.

The press meet was held at the CIID headquarters in the capital’s Kakrail.

The gold bars, weighing around 12kg, were found in the cargo hold of the Dubai-bound Flight BG-4148 of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

Rouf told the briefing Indian people like three things very much – movies, cricket, and gold – and they use lots of gold.

He said India accounts for 80 per cent of personal gold users in the world.

“We seized so much gold smuggled from India, and the smugglers lost crores of taka.

“Yet, they continue this crime, which means they still benefit from it,” the CIID director general said.

He also said smuggling was more common on unscheduled flights usually tracked by customs detectives.

Necessary steps would be taken in the seizure of the 104 gold bars upon further investigation, he added.
