A lacklustre performance in all three departments saw Bangladesh being thrashed by England by eight wickets in their second match of the Super 12 stage in UAE on Wednesday.

Batting first, none of the Bangladesh batsmen could make it work as they could only manage 124-9 in their innings. Mushfiqur Rahim top-scored with 29.

In reply, England had little to no trouble as Jason Roy’s 61 off 38 deliveries ensured that they made it two wins out of two with eight wickets and 35 balls in hand.

Bangladesh’s only bright spark in the whole match was Nasum Ahmed, who played an unlikely cameo of 19 runs from nine deliveries, taking Bangladesh over 120. He then went on to pick up the wicket of Jos Buttler and took an excellent catch at deep third man to dismiss the player of the match, Roy.

After opting to bat first, Bangladesh lost both their openers in the third over as Moeen Ali dismissed Liton Das (9) and Mohammad Naim (5) in consecutive deliveries.

A brilliant catch from Rashid then saw Shakib Al Hasan (4) back, and Bangladesh found themselves three-down within the powerplay.

A 37-run stand between Mushfiqur Rahim and skipper Mahmudullah Riyad showed some promise, but it all went to vain when Mushfiq was out LBW to part-time leg-spinner Liam Livingstone, trying a reverse sweep. Mushfiq was initially given not out, but a review from the English saw the decision overturned.

Afif Hossain (5) was the next to go as he was run out after Mahmudullah threw him under the bus by calling for a second and then refusing once the youngster was well out of the crease.

Mahmudullah went back after a sluggish knock of 19 off 24 deliveries as Livingstone picked his second. Tymal Mills then got rid of Shak Mahedi Hasan (11) as Bangladesh were reduced to 98-7.

From there on, Nasum’s cameo took Bangladesh to 124-9 as Nurul Hasan Sohan and Mustafizur Rahman were dismissed in the final two deliveries of the innings.

Chasing a small total of 125, England got off to a great start as their openers put together 39 within five overs before Nasum got rid of Buttler (18).

The remaining of the innings was the Roy show as the right-handed opener hit five fours and three sixes to reach his fifty off 33 deliveries. By the time Nasum took a brilliant catch to get him out for 61 and handed youngster Shoriful Islam his first T20 World Cup wicket, all that was left was the formality of England finishing the game.

Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow did just that as they finished the game with more than five overs in hand.
