‘Tigers’ end World Cup with dire display

Bangladesh ended their World Cup campaign with their worst possible display as Australia thumped them by eight wickets in Dubai on Thursday.

Batting first, a shambolic batting performance saw the Tigers collapse for just 73, with none of their batsmen crossing 20. Shamim Hossain scored 19, the highest for the team, with only two other batsmen managing to go into double figures- Mohammad Naim (17) and Mahmudullah Riyad (16). Adam Zampa was the destroyer-in-chief for Australia, picking up his career-best figures of five for 19. Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood picked up a couple of wickets each.

Australia chased down the meagre target in 6.2 overs with eight wickets in hand, giving their net run rate a massive boost. Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam picked a wicket each.

With a big win, Australia saw their net run rate move up to 1.031, which keeps them ahead of South Africa, who have a net run rate of 0.742.

Put in to bat first, Bangladesh lost Liton Das straight away as the batsman was gone for a golden duck

when he chopped on a full delivery from Mitchell Starc onto his stumps.

Soumya Sarkar and Mushfiqur Rahim then went in consecutive overs to Josh Hazelwood and Glen Maxwell respectively, with Soumya being bowled off an inside edge and Mushfiq being trapped LBW.

Mohammad Naim did not last long either as he returned in the fifth over of the powerplay, trying to pull Hazelwood and only managing to find Pat Cummins at short square leg.

Afif Hossain went back for his second duck in a row as he gave an easy catch to Aussie skipper Aaron Finch at slip off Adam Zampa.

Mahmudullah and Shamim then put together a brief 29-run stand, but after Zampa got rid of Shamim, Bangladesh folded within 25 deliveries for just 73.

In reply, Aaron Finch and David Warner came to the crease all guns blazing as they put together 58 in just five overs before Taskin knocked Finch’s stumps over.

Young Shoriful then dismissed Warner, but all that was just a consolation after a batting display that was, to say the least, disastrous.

After the match, Bangladesh skipper Mahmudullah said they had to take a look at their batting and had to figure out what had gone wrong.

“When you have these sort of performances, it is hard to say much. There are a lot of areas we have to look at, especially our batting.

The wickets that we have played on have been among the best for batting. We have to figure out what went wrong when we go back to Bangladesh,” he said.

He added that they lacked awareness as a unit and hoped that the supporters will keep supporting them.

“We have lacked awareness as a unit, and we have to pick up on that. I hope the supporters keep supporting us,” the Bangladesh skipper said.
