Tough action if artificial fuel crisis is created: Energy ministry

The government will take strict legal action if anyone attempts to create artificial crisis of fuel or overcharge the customers with fuel prices, said the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

No company or individual will be allowed to overcharge customers with fuel prices escaping the government fixed prices, said a press statement of Ministry on Thursday.

The ministry came up with the remarks, after some media recently reported that different filling stations were facing fuel crisis and many customers were forced to buy octene and patrol at excessive prices.

Explaining their position energy and mineral resources division said such information of overcharge or artificial crisis of fuel is completely baseless.

The country has enough reserve of octene and patrol currently, the ministry said, adding that until November 9, the total reserve of octene and patrol was more than 55,800 metric tonnes.

On November 3, Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) raised the prices of diesel and kerosene at the retail level – to be effective from zero hours on 4 November 2021.

The prices of diesel and kerosene have been increased to Tk 80 per litre from Tk 65 per litre indicating a 23.1 per cent rise. The price of furnace oil has also been raised to Tk 62 per litre from Tk 59 per litre marking a 5.1 per cent increase.

Amid the surging global energy prices, this decision came in order to recover the apparent losses incurred by the state-owned BPC, which is the monopoly of the market.
